The Face of Angkor

The Face of Angkor

Definitely my favourite. Bayon absolutely captivated me and it all boils down to this face. The hint of a smile and exact duplication on all 37 towers. I cannot imagine this structure in it’s full glory, with all 54 towers with four faces on each and with the central tower covered with gold leaves. Now ideally people believed that Bayon is a testament to King J VII’s deep spirituality as well as his inflated ego, as the faces were thought to be his. Further studies have shown that his large ego grows larger still, as there were rumours that the Face of Angkor was in fact an amalgamation of both his face and that of Buddha himself.
